Los Angeles detective Jake Gittes the lease by a woman claiming that Mrs. Muluray to spy out to her husband. Shortly after Gittes is hired, the real Mrs. Muluray appear in his office threatening to sue if he does not drop the case immediately. Gittes water any case, slowly uncovering a large conspiracy centering on water management, state and municipal corruption, land use and real estate, which include at least one murder.

A maritime cataclysm in 19th century blocked a man and a woman in the unexploited region of Africa. The lady is pregnant and gives birth to a son in their home of tree.
