It is the 35 year of the Common Era. The Emperor Tiberius is bothered by strange phenomena, an earthquake and the sky that becomes a black like an eclipse. His astrologers give him the just notice: his omens indicate that the world is in the strong pains of a great riot and that the old gods were destroyed. A new monarchy is on the point the rise to the East. The Emperor calls Tito Valerio Tauro, more prominent investigator in Rome, behind his exile.
