Recently, Stewart co-wrote and co-produced the feature film, Perfect Opposites (aka A Piece Of My Heart), which stars Piper Perabo (Coyote Ugly, Cheaper By The Dozen), Martin Henderson (Torque, The Ring), Joe Pantoliano, Jennifer Tilly, and Artie Lange. The movie, based on the stage play "A Piece of My Heart," which Stewart directed at The Odyssey Theatre in Los Angeles, is scheduled for release in 2005.
Other producing credits include founding Theatre 40's Annual One-Act Festival (Los Angeles) in 1990. He produced the first five festivals and was invited back for the tenth in 1999, which included the LA premiere of Arthur Miller's "Elegy For A Lady" and David Lindsay-Abaire's world premiere of "How We Talk In South Boston." Some highlights from his festivals include three plays published by Samuel French and two plays purchased by The Nederlander Organization and aired on the A&E Network starring Teri Garr, Martin Mull, Jean Stapleton, Marion Seldes, and many other notable actors. Some other playwrights whose work premiered at past festivals include Horton Foote, Robert Schenkhan, Craig Lucas and Jane Anderson.
In 1999, Stewart directed the Los Angeles premiere of Romulus Linney's "2" to critical acclaim. Other stage directing credits include Abby Tetenbaum's "Heat of Re-entry," which The LA Times hailed as "one of the best plays of the year." He has directed in New York, Los Angeles, Toronto, and Calgary, and has taught at The American Academy of Dramatic Arts (LA) and The American Musical and Dramatic Academy (NY).
