On the 2nd July communication systems are sent worldwide in the confusion by a foreign atmospheric interference. It is soon learnt by the military that several huge objects on a collision course with the earth are. First thought to be meteors they are revealed later to be a gigantic spacecraft, controlled by a mysterious foreign kind. After attempts to communicate with the foreigners nowhere go, David Levinson, an ex-scientist Kabeltechniker turned, discovers that the foreigners are about to attack outlines around the globe during less than one day. On the 3rd July the foreigners extinguish almost New York, Los Angeles, and Washington. The survivors open in convoys to the area 51, a foreign government testing ground where it is spread, the military has a won foreign spacecraft of her own. The survivors devise a plan to sit down against the enslave foreigners to the weir, and on the 4th July becomes the day humanity will fight for his freedom. On the 4th July is her Independence Day.

Die Überlebenden denken einen Plan aus, sich gegen die Versklaven-Ausländer zur Wehr zu setzen, und am 4. Juli wird die Tagesmenschheit wird um seine Freiheit kämpfen. Am 4. Juli ist ihr Unabhängigkeitstag.
