Commander Luke Graham is selected to lead the first occupied mission to Mars. On the entrance of the red planet the team discovers an old structure according to dome which appears to be a beacon. The dome destroys the team and leaves Luc injured. Recently widowed Jim McConnell leads the rescue mission. If they come, they find Lke unexpectedly alive, and he has spent the time only the learning of the secrets of the mysterious construction. Now the question becomes: Do they come into the dome and do her lives answer to the oldest question of the humanity, maybe, besides, risking, or do return to the earth with what they really know and return in the strength with the equipment and the need?.

Joe Darrow (Kevin Costner) lost his wife, Emily (Susanna Thompson), in an accident of bus in South America. It is difficult in order that he accepts his death, but when it seems that he can change with his life, at least, something strange they happen. The mysterious departures of symbols appear around him all the time, and safe Joe that Emily is besides everything that, trying to contact with him and to tell something to him. He goes after the traces that the symbols left, what drive it to different places. His friends think that he goes mad, but he is constant with his decision of discovering what it is behind the symbols. When the last symbol brings him the South America, he is on the point of being very very surprised.
