The patriarch (Jeff Daniels) of a family of strange Bruklin complains to have been once a great novelist, but he settled down in a teaching job. When his wife (Laura Linney) discovers her talent of writing own, the jealousy divides the family, leaving two adolescent children to forge new relations with his parents. The character of Linney begins to date the most young trainer of tennis of his son. Meantime, the character of Daniels is wrapped by the student whom his oldest son is pursuing.
