In the beginning of the 19th century, the force of Napoleão controlled most of Europe. In Russia, one of few countries was still not conquering, the army prepares to face troops of Napoleão in Austria. Between the soldiers healthy Nicholas Rostov (Jeremy Brett) and Prince Andrei Bolkonsky (Mel Ferrer). Pierre Bezukhov (Henry Fonda), friend of the intellectual and of own style of Andrei that *quot; he knows what it is right but it still does badly, *quot; it is not interested in the struggle. Pierre’s life is modified when his father dies, when a vast inheritance is leaving it. He is attracted Natasha Rostov (Audrey Hepburn), Nicholas’s sister, but give in to wishes of baser and he gets married with the superficial Princess, materialistic Helene (Anita Ekberg). The marriage quickly ends when Pierre discovers the true nature of his wife. Andrei is captured and then launched by the Frenchmen, and turn at alone home to look at his wife die in the childbirth. During a visit to the months of country then, Pierre and Andrei are again. Andrei sees Natasha and falls in the love, but his father will only allow the marriage if they will postpone it during a year. While Andrei is distant in Poland in a military mission, Natasha is drawn to Anatole Kuragin (Vittorio Gassmann), crook and libertine. Pierre says the Natasha of Anatole’s past before she can escape with the boyfriend with him. Napoleão (Herbert Lom) invades Russia. Pierre visits Andrei in eve of the battle, and observes the battle that it follows. Traumatized for the slaughter, he swears of killing Napoleão itself.
