The film is in charge of the situation of British prisoners of war during the Second World war who are ordered to construct a bridge to lodge the railway of Burma-Siam. Their instinct must sabotage the bridge, but, conducted by colonel Nicholson (Alec Guinness), they are persuaded that the bridge should be constructed as a symbol of British morale, mind and respectability in the hostile circumstances. At the beginning, the prisoners admire Nicholson when he endures courageously torment rather than compromise his principles aimed at the Japanese commander Saito (Sessue Hayakawa). He is an arrogant but honorable man, who is slowly revealed to be obsessive one deceiving. It persuades himself that the bridge is a monument with British character, but a monument really belongs to him and her emphasis on its building becomes a subtle form of collaboration with the enemy. The unknown to him, the Allies sent a mission to the jungle, led by the Manager (Jack Hawkins) and an American, Tondages (William Holden), to exaggerate the bridge.
