In 1896, a building engineer of the British army, J. H. Patterson (Kilmer) is sent to build a railway bridge about Tsavo of Uganda river for the British East African railway. Joe, a young Treibnetzfischdampfer without, finds work on a barge which travels between Glasgow and Edinburgh, obsessed by Les and his Mrs. Ella. Of an afternoon they discover the corpse of a young woman who swims in the water. Accident? Suicide? Murder? Because the police investigates and suspect is stopped, we discover that Joe knows more than he lets out. Bit by bit we learn from the previous respect of Joe with the dead woman. In the meantime, an unspoken attraction develops between Joe and Ella, the claustrophobic tensions in the limited space of the barge raising.
